In an effort to support our community members in educating their children, Hayneville Telephone Company, is offering the Mr. And Mrs. Howard S. Powell, II Telecommunications Scholarship Program consisting of three $2,000.00 awards payable to the college of their choice. One applicant will be chosen from each area school: Calhoun High School, Central High School, and Lowndes Academy. This scholarship is made available through Hayneville Telephone Company.

Application Criteria

Seniors attending any school located in the Hayneville Telephone Company service area are eligible to apply for the Mr. And Mrs. Howard S. Powell, II Telecommunications Scholarship. Applicants must be a United States citizen and must be current, full-time high school students. Applicants must anticipate graduation from high school during the academic year in which application is made and must be planning to pursue a degree at an accredited two or four-year college. To apply, students can obtain applications from their school office, the Hayneville Telephone Company business office at 210 East Tuskeena St. in Hayneville, Alabama, or the website, www.htcnet.net. This application must be completed in its entirety and returned with one letter of recommendation written and signed by the principal and guidance counselor and a certified copy of their school transcript. All of these items must be received at the designated address by March 3rd of their senior year.

Selection Criteria

Selection of the telecommunications scholar is based on a number of factors with special emphasis on each individual's character, personal merit, and background. Merit is demonstrated in a variety of ways: leadership in school, civic and other extracurricular activities; academic achievement; and motivation to serve and succeed in all endeavors. Selection will be sensitive to the economic backgrounds of applicants, reflecting as much as possible the demographic profiles of the various students in our areas.

Selection Process

  1. All applications and recommendations are submitted by March 3rd postmark deadline and mailed to Post Office Box 175, Hayneville, AL 36040.
  2. A committee consisting of members of the local community and one member of the Hayneville Telephone Company Board of Directors will evaluate and review all applications according to the criteria established.
